Bhutan
Wool blanket · Bumthang · Amber
A unique heritage weave from the Land of the Thunder Dragon, this thick Yathra blanket is skilfully made with naturally dyed high-quality wool and features ancestral Bhutanese motifs. This stunning textile captivates with its rich golden amber base adorned by bands of mauve, cream, and green stripes, enhanced by intricate geometric patterns including interlocking colourful meander designs and dynamic star and triangle motifs. The generous golden fringe adds a luxurious finishing touch that transforms any space into a celebration of Bhutanese textile heritage.
The Craft. Yathra represents one of Bhutan's most treasured weaving traditions, where coloured wool threads are interlaced on traditional looms to create both the striped foundation and complex geometric patterns. The dimensional motifs—from the continuous meander borders to the bold central medallions and clustered triangles—are carefully woven into the fabric using supplementary weft techniques, with each pattern requiring precision and deep knowledge of ancestral designs to execute. The thick, durable construction and saturated natural dyes create an ever-changing play of colour and texture, while the ingenious combinations based on the five Ne-nga (rainbow) colours and the four colours of Earth's elements—Sa (Earth), Chu (Water), May (Fire) and Lung (Air)—give expression to the ancestral belief that balance with nature's elements brings protection and safety from natural disasters.
The Heritage. Bumthang's long winters, the numerous noble families originating there, and strong royal patronage made weaving workshops in this lush valley flourish in the mid-1800s and continuously improve their skill. Yathra became an object of barter and a means to pay taxes, cementing its importance in Bhutanese society. Bhutan has some of the rarest and most exquisite textiles in the world, with stories woven in each thread that carry cultural and spiritual significance through generations.
The Maker. The women at Yarn&Yathra take inspiration from nature and ancient patterns to create modern pieces that are rich in colours and symbols. Working with naturally dyed high-quality wool, these skilled artisans create each piece on traditional looms, honouring centuries-old techniques while bringing contemporary vision to their work. Their mastery of colour theory rooted in Bhutanese cosmology and technical execution reflects both deep cultural knowledge and artistic innovation, resulting in textiles that honour Bhutan's heritage while bringing warmth, protection, and beauty to contemporary spaces.
